10 Things you should know
about Colonial Church
in Prairie Village
United Church of Christ
1. We’re on Mission Road.
That’s more than our address. For us, our mission is a journey...a commitment to use God’s gifts to make a difference in people’s lives.
2. Meaningful worship.
From a traditional foundation, we continue to explore new and meaningful ways to enhance worship and provide inspiration, encouragement, comfort and challenge.
3. Open & Affirming.
Colonial has always been a welcoming congregation. In 2007, the congregation voted to declare Colonial an open and affirming church. This commitment is more than a few nice words on paper. Our doors are truly open to all.
4. Reaching beyond our walls.
Our members are passionate about sharing our time, talent and resources to help those less fortunate and to promote justice in our community and the world. Colonial fosters a culture of volunteers.
5. We treasure our children and youth. We strive to provide a vibrant Christian education program. Volunteer leaders and the youth themselves are involved in the life of the church through worship, service and fellowship.
6. Our faith is 2,000 years old. Our thinking is not.
As part of the United Church of Christ, Colonial is a progressive Christian community. We take the Bible seriously, but not literally.
7. A caring community.
The idea of the “Colonial family” finds expression through genuine concern for each other. When someone is going through a difficult time we offer meaningful, prayerful support. We join in celebrating joyous moments of life. A call, a card, someone by your side. A hug, a meal, a prayer, a ride…we’re there for one another.
8. A growing, multi-generational congregation.
While Colonial is fortunate to have many long-term members, in recent years, we have been blessed to have a growing number of enthusiastic young adults and children become involved in the life of the church
9. This is not a “one-size-fits-all” church.
Part of our vitality comes from small groups brought together for a common interest – Bible study, a writer’s group, quilting, book clubs, movie night, women’s and men’s groups and more.
10. Open minds.
We come from a wide variety of religious traditions and are at different places in our faith journeys. While we may have strong opinions and beliefs, we recognize that diversity of thought enriches our congregation.
